What makes a surround mix attractive? Does the result of a surround production compared with a stereo production provide more pleasure and does it justify the expenditure? If so, is it possible to realise such a production with common production procedures? Is the question about surround or stereo perhaps a question of taste?
To this and some more questions about surround application in music productions, the music producer Tom Ammermann gives answers and provides an insight into his work and visions.

Contents

  • 35 minutes 'Making Of' from the production and 55 minutes interview with Tom Ammermann and Michael Abbing, in which they give an insight into experiences and visions about surround, production and products.
  • Video sound, recorded with surround microphones which were fixed on the camera
  • Music mixes in surround, in which nearly all instruments were recorded discrete and with the 5 surround microphone arrays in one take using the over dub procedure
  • Comparison of microphone arrays at the same room position (piano, drums, vocal, strings): SPL Atmos 5.1, OCT-Surround, Soundfield, Neumann WNS 100, Fukudatree with Sennheiser MKH-800. All of them were recorded in one take with identical hard- and software in 24Bit/48Khz.
